Second Draft Evaluation and Final Music video

Updated: Feb 28, 2020

After completing my first draft I firstly wanted to get some feedback from my teacher who helped me work through some of the issues, I then went and got some peer feedback as due to the client having work commitments she wont have time to give any feedback before my uni deadline.

One of the main issues I had was that I hadn't captured enough footage and this was mainly due to only having two hours in the theatre so I had to make sure I had enough footage to make something with. As well as only having two hours to film I also mentioned in my first draft evaluation that in trying to combat the lack of filming time I had re planned some areas of the storyboard but not written the changes down and this also contributed to ending up not having enough footage. I noticed this fairly on into editing but was unsure how much it would affect the overall product and it turned out it would affect it a lot. The first issue that derived from not having enough footage was that my cutting rate was notably slow with some shots lasting up to 15 seconds. My teacher instantly noticed this issue but showed me how to get the best out of the footage that I did have by cutting up some of the longer shots to cut between each-other, we also changed the narrative a bit which actually ended up helping the narrative to make more sense. This would however mean that in the final product some of the not so well focused shots were left in. The out of focus shots weren't too bad when on a small editing screen but are more noticeable when the video is viewed in full screen but there was little I could do. Making these changes to the narrative to increase the pace of the video also caused an issue with my colour theory idea and the use of the different coloured scarfs. The scarf was supposed to be grey at the beginning and change to green in the middle to represent a change in mood of my client however I had a really good quality shot of Sharon from the side but it was in the grey scarf as it was for the first half of the song. I ended up needing to use this shot later on which in turn breaks the colour theory idea I was aiming for. That being said however colour theory and costumes come below cutting rate in importance I had to make the decision to use the shot at the end to better my overall music video by keeping a quicker pace. I do feel quite disappointed in myself for making quite a basic error that has had a big effect on the finished music video but I do also appreciate that I had tight time constraints in which to get the video finished by. In the future I would make sure just to write all changes to the project down to avoid confession as I can not always guarantee i will get as much time as I would like at a location.

As for my peer feedback, Kerrie said she really liked the spotlight in the theatre shot and thought it worked well for affect. She thought some of the outdoor shots were a bit dark but I quickly used colour correction to lighten up these shots.

Overall I don't think this is my best work but I can definitely see that I have learnt a number of new skills like how to use the gimbal and from this have been able to get a few really professional quality fluid shots to add to my showreel. Below is he finished Music Video.
