Folk Music Video Research

During my meeting with Sharon I discussed other artists within her genre who have videos that she likes. I have looked through a number of them and have analysed three videos (see below) and I will be looking to take some of the things I liked in to my video.

Adam Beattie was one of the artists Sharon said she liked the videos of and I like his videos as well as they are artsy and different. The official video for his song the man I have become features a narrative of him standing in front of a gate switching between different instruments and discovering the man he has become. The video is constructed by putting loads of photographs together giving an almost stop motion feel to it. It feels original yet artsy and feels right for a singer songwriter it is also entirely black and white.

What I liked:

Use of photographs- Although this wouldn't be an appropriate technique for the music video I am trying to make I do like that it gives Adam's video some originality and I would want to make something original for Sharon to, something that helps her stand out as an artist.

Singer isn't singing the song during the video- Adam is not singing the song in the video and this is something I am going to think about doing with Sharon's video as she wants ti get away from live music videos and videos that feel like they could be live. This is something I need to discuss with Sharon though and see what she thinks is best.

Black and white- Having the video in Black and white makes it feel more vintage and works for the singer songwriter genre. I don't know if this is something that would work with my video idea but it is something I can discuss with Sharon.

What I didn't like so much:

Shot in one location- As much as I don't like using loads of locations just shooting in one makes the video feel quite basic, I think a good music video needs three or four different locations.

Using Dance to tell the story- Adam dances in the video but mainly with just hand movements and it isn't always clear what they are supposed to mean

The first artist Sharon mentioned was Catherine Rudie and on looking at her videos they are very professionally shot with a lot of beautiful landscape shots, these being most apparent in her newest video for her song London is changing. I would say Catherine's videos are more conceptual than narrative but there are still things I can learn from her videos.

What I liked:

Professional shots- The entire video is very well shot to a professional standard and this is something I would want to replicate in any video I make. I will post some of the shots below but some of the landscape shots are very good.

Use of lighting- The lighting really compliments the shots in this video and I feel like it could all be just natural lighting and they have just made the most of the golden hour early in the morning. What time the shoot is going to be is quite dependent on my location but I will definitely be keeping lighting in my thoughts when considering locations for Sharon's video.

What I didn't like so much-

Lacks impact- With a song like London is changing I would want the video the impact the viewer and make them feel what the song writer is trying to get across which in this case is how it feels like everything is changing around you when you go through a break up. The video has lots of professional shots but they never really mean anything and I don't understand their relationship to the song. As much as I want my video to look really good, it is more important to me that the song gets across what Sharon is trying to say in her song as I feel that's what Sharon is looking for as well.

The folk genre of music isn't something I know a lot about so I have had to do a lot research to get a feel of whats important in this genre and its music videos. The last video I have analysed is a band I have gone and found because I wanted to look at what a music video for a famous folk band would look like. I found the band The dead South and the video for their song In hell i'll be in good company which has 158 Million views. The video features the band in loads of different locations playing their song but it isn't a live music video but a narrative/conceptual one.

What I liked-

Use of locations- The video features them playing their song in a number of different locations but it never feels over the top or to fast paced. In fact the locations actually make the video more visually interesting. Due to lack of budget and time using lots of locations Isn't really possible for Sharon's video and I also feel the video can become easily cluttered and over the top if you don't use the location's well.

Ends where it starts- Just like I plan to do in my video their video comes full circle and ends with the same shot as it starts with and I really like that idea of everything returning to its roots, I think its a good representation of the genre.

Modern locations, classic Folk dress- The band are all wearing stereotypical male Folk singer clothing but the locations used are almost all modern. I like the contrast and I think it shows them bringing an old genre of music back for a new generation.

What I didn't like so much-

Nothing
