Wix Test and Starting to work with code

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

Before I start to film the clips I wanted to make sure I could make my project look how I wanted it to. I have experimented with google sites but as I mentioned in a previous post I didn't feel I could make a professional looking art piece on it as it didn't give your full control over placement of the videos. The piece that first gave me the idea to even take this project on was a piece that my teacher had actually done himself using code to have nine videos playing at the same time simultaneously and constantly looping. I loved how the piece looked at the potential it had to have a big impact on people due to it being so unique so I asked him how he made his piece. He said he used code and code is not something I had ever worked with before so I was at first sceptical of my abilities to be able to learn how to code in such a short period of time. My teacher however was willing to let me use his code but of course I want this project to be mine and to have control over how the videos look so he did a one to one session with me on how what the most important parts of that code meant so that I could make my own adjustments (See code changes post). Before I could do this though I had to have somewhere like a website builder that I could both put the code onto and also distribute my project from when it was done. I don't believe google sites had a feature where you can input code so my next option was to look at wix as I already use it to write this blog so I have some knowledge of the features it offers. At first I wanted to see if I could create a whole new website just for my piece that idea however was quickly thrown out as wix only lets premium members code actually into a website. I kept searching for options however and found you can put code into a blog post and that of course I could share a link for that blog post to distribute my piece. I then ran a test (see below) to see how the videos would look and they worked and played fine I would however need to make some changes to the code to sort out things like sizing so the 3x3 grid fitted onto the post without the viewer having to move anything to view the whole piece.

In conclusion despite being sceptical at first my project now seems to be coming together well and in good time so I am feeling confident of being able to create a professional well rounded product that has an impact on its viewers. My next step ow I know the code works with a wix blog post though is to go ahead and start filming the clips.
