Research into event band showreels 2

Tom

The second bands site I looked into was a band UK based events band called Agent Joe who play a range of well known music through the ages and focus like Blackout City want to on weddings and events. Much like the last band I looked at they have a number of professional looking videos on their website starting with a showreel but also including videos of individual performances.

What I liked about their videos:

They look very high budget and professional: Their videos look very professional and high end and this is done with a mix of the things below. I don't really have the equipment or time to make something quite as high budget/high end but I always aim to make my videos look as good as possible.

Use of lighting: Rather than just having some pretty coloured lights like the band before they have a studio set up that uses the lights in a way that really shows off the band and isn't to over the top. I am however doing a live shoot so I don't have control over the lights that I would normally like but I am doing a sound and light check when I set up in the afternoon before the shoot so I can test the lighting then.

Interesting camera angles: A lot of the showreels I have looked at use similar camera angles where as this one used some slightly different ones which give it some originality.

A good range of content: Their website features a range of different videos showing off the range of music the band play.

Use of Background: In the background of their showreel video they have another camera angle of the band playing so at most times you can see what is going on from two different angles. I think this is largely what makes the video look high end although for an events band this could be seen as over the top.

What I did not like:

The only issue I could see with this bands videos is that they're like professional music videos so if you were a customer with no other information than just their videos you might not think they were an events band. Other than this their videos are really well made and I have learnt a lot from watching them.

The third and final events band that I liked the videos of are a bit different in that they are an events band that play classic songs but with a Folk twist.

What I liked:

Themed: The bands videos really play on the Folk twist they put on their music, they are all wearing suits without jackets but with flat caps and as well as their outfits the location their videos were shot at also looks like a barn which again adds to that Folk theme they are going for.

Slower cuts: The cuts in their videos are slower to match the slower tone of the music. The band I am making videos for mainly cover pop songs so a faster cutting rate might the more appropriate.

What I did not like so much:

Some harsh lighting: Some of the lights are a bit harsh at time in the video. They are sometimes looking at the camera directly which affects the quality of the image.

Some of the transitions don't work: The transitions in their videos are often the camera going out and then back into focus and it is really jarring to watch as a viewer. I would go with either no transitions or very subtle ones.

No showreel: Their website doesn't feature a showreel and I think it is always good to have a general overview of the bands work as well as individual performances.

Blackout City (Second Draft update)

I have finished making the changes that the band asked for and have finished the second draft (see below). The changes weren't too...
