Blackout City (Third and Fourth Draft and feedback)

Updated: Jan 13, 2020

A change the band wanted to make to the second draft was adjusting a few spelling errors which was easily done as well as adding some contact details. I had spoke to the band previously saying what sort of information did they want in the showreel but they hadn't got back to me and so until this point I had to just improvise and hoped they liked the text I put on the video. They did ask for some changes to the text I originally put on the video and after making those I didn't think they would want anything else added but I always try to meet the clients requirements and quickly put on the information they wanted. I was a bit stressed at the time as I wanted to get this project finished but once I made the changes I definitely agree with the client that the video did need more contact information. If this issue was to come up again I would make sure at the beginning that the client tells me exactly what text they want on their video to avoid confusion and save time later on in the edit.

The other day I received the new re recorded audio and got to work syncing the new audio with the edited footage. The band had done a really good job of matching the tempo of the new music to the tempo of the music on the night and this made my job a lot easier, the quality of the new audio was also a lot better than the audio that was captured on the night. The only syncing issue I did have was that the last song (Mr.Brightside) was the last song they played on the actual night and had the singer interacting with the audience which both me and the band wanted to keep in the showreel these interactions however were not on the new audio. My initial thoughts were to just leave the original audio in for that song and hope that it wasn't to obvious that the audio quality had dropped to a viewer. I spoke to Rob and mentioned the issue to which he agreed just keep the original audio in for now and he said he would show the band and see what they thought of the sudden drop in quality and wether it was very noticeable. I was confident that the drop in audio quality wouldn't be to noticeable as most of the parts of Mr.Brightside I used in the showreel didn't have vocals in them and I felt that the biggest drop in audio quality compared to the new audio was the vocal parts. I feel like I delt with the issue in the best way I could as it is most important that the client likes the showreel and therefore they should have the final say. In the end the band got back to me after watching the Third draft and said could I put the new audio in for the last song but keep the thank you and goodnight that the vocalist says at the end of the original track. I was skeptical that my idea of just putting a transition on would work but after cutting Mr.brightside down the transition is barely noticeable. If a similar issue arose again i would deal with it in the same way as the what the client wants is always the priority.

Second Draft Feedback

After adding the bands contact details and fixing the audio issues in the last song the band then came back to me with a couple of final changes. The first change was that they felt with the new audio in the showreel that the transition between the first and second song no longer worked. I spoke with Rob about the issue and he said he felt just making the first song shorter would make the transition not as harsh but that the lead singer would rather get rid of the first song completely as she didn't feel it was her best work. I was really worried at this point that I might have to get rid of the entire first song which is like a 5th of the project and that all my hard work I had put into editing the first song together would be gone. I went back to the edit and played around with the songs and it just wasn't working I ended up cutting half the first song in order for the transition to work but I was much happier doing this than just getting rid of that song completely. On showing the band thankfully they agreed that the new edit worked much better than before. In future I would try and make sure that there isn't a chance of this becoming an issue by making sure the band has pre recorded audio before I start the project.

The last little change the band wanted to me to make was to make the contact details appear on the screen for longer. My thinking was that an audience member could just pause the video at that point however my client got back to me saying that you have to make things as easy for the audience as possible when it comes to promotional things. I completely understood what he was saying but I was worried that making the text appear longer would be the text would stay on screen over a point where the visuals cut to different band member. The cut however didn't change anything and I do agree that having the text on the screen for longer makes a lot of sense. In the future I need to keep in mind what this video has to do (In this case get the band clients) and remember sometimes there are more important things than how the video look.

Blackout City (Second Draft update)

I have finished making the changes that the band asked for and have finished the second draft (see below). The changes weren't too...

Schedule

Now I am starting to work with a number of different clients I thought it would be appropriate to organise all the shoots into a schedule...
