My research into event band show reels first lead me to a band called Over the Threshold who are Devon based. Much like Blackout City want to this band specialises in weddings and party's and have very professional looking website. Although it might not be my place to say Blackout City could do with expanding their brand with professional website and social media links etc. I will bring it up in the meeting and see what they think using this website as an example.
What I like about their website:
Easy to navigate between pages: The layout of their website is easy to get around with clear headings and titles which makes it accessible to more people.
Clear and easy to read writing: Their fonts are easy to read with professional terms being used making them sound like they know what the are talking about. The writing isn't overbearing either, it tells you what you need to know and leaves the rest to the pictures and videos showing what the band can do.
A number of professional pictures and videos: They have clearly spent a lot of time on their photo and video work employing professional photographers/videographers to capture the band in action. This allows a customer to actually see how good or bad the band is before booking.
Tracks and set-lists: Their website features the set-lists of the songs they perform and tells you exactly what you get and how much it will cost. Even-though they are a cover band they still have audio snippets which gives the customer an audio as well as a visual idea of what the band are like. At the moment Blackout City do not have any recorded tracks so this is something I am going to mention to them.
What I think they could improve about their website:
The only downside with their website in my opinion is that there is just a little bit to much on it, It could have less headings and be a bit more direct.
As well as having a really professional website their show reels are also looking really good although I think there is some room for small improvements still.
What I liked:
Number of different angles: Their showreel video features a number of cuts between a wide angle focusing on the singer and close ups of the other members cut in between. This something I will be aiming to do in my showreel for blackout City as having regular quick cuts makes the video feel more fun.
lots of video content: Their website features more than just a showreel, it also features videos for individual songs which gives a customer more content to judge wether the band are right for their event or not. This is a good thing because it agains lets the band show off what they can do but in a different way to a showreel.
Colourful Lighting: They use a number of different coloured lights in their showreel again adding to the fun feel of the video. It does give away that the video was shot in a studio but that isn't really a bad thing however my video is being shot live so I will have to use the lighting that the band are already using on the night.
What I think could be improved:
Cuts could be quicker, although the video does have multiple angles and cuts the cuts could be quicker to give more of a fun vibe to the video. I would be aiming to cut slightly quicker than their showreel and on the beat of the music.
