In the last couple of weeks I have been working hard to put together the best showreel I can for Blackout City. There has been some challenges but overall I am starting to notice that the quality of my work is vastly improving.
The first thing I do before I start an edit is gather all the footage together so I know what I am working with. I am finding it hard at the moment to store lots of footage as I only have a 32GB pen drive and this is why a 2TB hard drive is the next piece of equipment I am going to buy. This means I have to leave the whoever I work withs footage on the site they send it to me as I don't have enough space to mine and their footage on my pen drive. Usually I ask my colleagues footage to be sent over on google drive as it's the best free storage available however this wasn't an option this time as my colleague had reached her google drive file limit. This meant her files had to be sent over to me on onedrive which is not a site I had used before and I found it difficult to get to grips with particularly when I went looking for one specific clip as one drives previews take ages to load up properly. Once I had all the footage together it was a matter of which audio did I think was best to use, I ended up only really being able to use the audio from my directional mic as the other cameras mic failed half way through and the audio recorder also failed (See audio remastering and filming posts for more details). I spoke to the band and mentioned that there was an audio issue and we are still working to resolve the issue at the moment, however I started editing with the audio from my mic. I started by picking three of the bands best tracks from the night as my plan was to have the showreel be three minutes in length with one minute of three different songs. The tracks I picked were Riot at the start as I thought the showreel should open lively and upbeat then I choose Son of a Preacher man as it's a slightly slower song and shows the variety of music that the band play and to end with I choose Mr.Brightside as it's a song that has become synonymous for being played at events and parties. I chose the first verse and chorus of each of these songs and once I had my audio layed down I could start putting my footage over the top making sure each edit was on the beat of the track as much as possible. I started to realise that I had a lot of really good close ups from my camera but a lot of the wide shots had people dancing in them luckily I could still use the crowd shots from my colleagues camera though and she had manage to get some really nice slow pans across the crowd which had to be in the showreel. Once I had put the audio and footage together my teacher showed me how I could improve my showreel with some very simple changes. He showed my how to put fake black bars in to make the showreel feel more cinematic and also how to make those bars open up at the start of the showreel. I also added the bands logos and some text about what genres of music they play as they were unsure on what text they wanted on the showreel at the time. I have now exported the first draft and I am waiting for feedback from the band ready for the second draft.
In conclusion I have learnt a lot from making the first draft of Blackout City's showreel and I have also seen a good amount of improvement in the shots that I get compared to when I first started my course. I am slowly starting to see my editing, filming and client communication skills improving and I think this all through doing more and more projects and you start to realise what things do and don't work.
